Madrid Christmas Time
Madrid is being a very special city during the Christmas period. The Spanish Capital offers you a great variety of art, activities on the streets, live concerts, food&shopping markets, and nightlife, with some of the world’s most interesting leisure attractions. Madrid offers you magical days full of creative lights and vibrant environment until the 6th of January.
If you have chosen this wonderful city to spend your holidays, we show you different plans that you should not miss. City style and golf need to be part of your Christmas holidays.
Madrid Tourism organise as every year a huge display of lights that convert to the city in a symbol of Art and Design. It is a tradition to award the best designers who decorated the scenes on the streets.
Christmas markets and Nativity Scenes are quite popular mainly in the area of Playa Mayor and Plaza de España. Do not miss a shopping day in popular markets as Madrid Market, Expoclausura, Moncloa Fashion Market, The Solidary Book Market, Charity Market , or the Christmas Market of Santa Bárbara Palace, etc…
The Nativity Scenes (representation of Jesus birth) are little exhibitions that you should visit in your next journey that you will find in some many places. Once there, you can admire models that represent the birth of Jesus, from Mary and Joseph’s journey to the adoration of the Magi in the stable.
The Sylvester Race is also a very good plan if you like sports and you can go across the the city. It is celebrated the 31st of December, from Paseo de la Castellana to Vallecas and has an amazing participation because is always really good organised and for most of the 30.000 runners, the year ends with a run.
These dates are really special for us:
Christmas Eve dinner (Noche Buena)
Christmas Day lunch (Día de Navidad)
New Year’s Eve dinner (Noche Vieja)
New Year’s Day lunch (Día de Año Nuevo)
Epiphany (Jan. 6th) lunch (Día de Reyes)
Christmas Eve / Christmas Day (Noche Buena / Día de Navidad)
If you are in Madrid any of these dates, you will find so many places to go out and drink until late.
New Year’s Eve in Madrid basically invites you different options:
Going to the Puerta del Sol with all the crowds and celebrating the 12 chimes at midnight in Madrid’s main square, then heading off to a private party, disco or a club. Having dinner at a restaurant, where your meal, drinks, the party and often a dance with live music will all is included in a fixed price. Staying in a nice hotel with it is own party; this is really nice option too.
New Year’s Eve involves the tradition, unique to Spain, of eating 12 grapes in time to the 12 chimes of the clock at midnight.
In New Year’s Eve is nice to go to play golf in any of the fantastic courses and in the afternoon visit Plaza Mayor and go to Chocolateria San Gines in order to calm those hunger pangs with some delicious chocolate con churros. It is a nice tradition.
The Christmas time is finished in Spain the 6th of January with the day of “Reyes Magos”, the most special day for children and time to share the Roscón de Reyes. A sweet dessert to end an unforgettable Christmas holidays in Madrid.
